Tristan McLaughlin, of Seaford, was indicted on charges related to the crash that happened in North Amityville in October, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

“When you make the decision to get behind the wheel, you make the commitment to respect the lives and safety of others on the road,” Tierney said. This defendant’s alleged reckless behavior has caused irreversible damage to another person, and he will be prosecuted vigorously.”

The DA's Office said McLaughlin drove a 2020 Nissan Frontier north on Route 110 and rear-ended another vehicle at the corner of Lindy Avenue in North Amityville at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The victim, who had been waiting at a red light, was pushed through the intersection into oncoming traffic lanes, Tierney reported.

The impact reportedly caused the victim's vehicle to crash into two other vehicles that were stopped at a red light on the opposite side of the road.

The victim underwent surgery for a spinal cord injury and remains hospitalized.

A toxicology report found that McLaughlin had intoxicating substances in his system, Tierney said.

The DA's reported that McLaughlin is charged with:

  • Second-degree assault
  • Second-degree vehicular assault
  • Second-degree reckless endangerment
  • Driving while ability impaired
  • Reckless driving

Tierney said McLaughlin was released on his own recognizance, and his license was suspended.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday, Feb. 7.
